As you may have seen in the news, Governor Jim Justice called a special session of the WV Legislature during the scheduled July interim meetings. His call for the session was to provide a reduction in your personal income tax, House bill 301. Once members were in town, it was decided that the body would act on the abortion statute as well and asked the Governor to add it to the call. Two other bills were also added that provide funding and services related to family planning, House bill 304 and Senate bill 3002. Over the next five days the bills were debated but nothing has been finalized and the body adjourned until conflicts between the House and Senate could be resolved. I anticipate reconvening in the next month. I was unable to attend this past session but have no scheduling conflicts for the next session.

Two other notes of interest for Taylor County are broadband and roads. I am requesting a meeting of the new Taylor County Superintendent of Department of Highways to get an update of the planned projects for our district. If you have a road issue you would like to report please file online at http://transportation.wv.gov. If you do not have internet or need help with the process, contact me and I will fill it out for you. These requests are seen by the state DOH which helps them have oversight of what the needs are in the different districts and how timely they are being addressed. For issues with current broadband the House has set up a reporting mechanism to try and assist with accountability. Email Cableconcerns@wvhouse.gov so that our Technology and Infrastructure Committee can track issues and discuss with providers. Finally, I want to say congratulations to Jordan Niggemyer of Grafton High School. Jordan was selected to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington, D.C.  She is the first GHS student to be selected to attend. I had the opportunity to meet her at Girls State and thought this young lady is amazing.
